Katherine’s K-Pop Recap: February 8-14, 2021

A summary of the news, current and upcoming comebacks, charts and music show wins, and more!

NOTE: Except in special cases, the news recapped in these posts will refer to K-pop only. K-dramas, variety shows, and other forms of entertainment will only be mentioned if there is an idol or idol group involved.

This week was a little slower than normal because of Lunar New Year, which was celebrated from February 11 to 13.

News to Note

  • YG Entertainment and Universal Music Group have both invested in KYBK Live, a company that Big Hit Entertainment jointly started with the company Kiswe. KYBK Live is responsible for the VenewLive streaming platform, which was used for BTS’s online concerts last year. With this investment from YG and UMG, all four companies are planning to turn VenewLive into a larger scale global streaming platform. You can read more information about it here.
  • TWICE’s Dahyun and Chaeyoung’s cover of JYP and Rain’s “Switch to Me” gained some attention because of Dahyun’s outfit. Designer Kim Balko posted an Instagram story noting how the hanbok jacket (jeogori) that Dahyun wore in the video was similar to one she custom designed for BLACKPINK’s Jisoo in the “How You Like That” music video. JYP Entertainment then made an apology statement – you can read the translation and more about the situation here.
    • NOTE: Most articles and tweets I read labeled Kim Balko differently; some said “BLACKPINK stylist” and some said “hanbok designer.” So, I did a little digging to find some more context. If you’re interested in who she is and what she does, you can look at her website here. I specifically linked her bio/resume, which shows that she made custom designed outfits for BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” and also did styling for that specific comeback. It also shows that she’s worked with many JYP artists and made custom designs for them as well.

Album Sales, Streaming, and Charting

NOTE 1: Gaon‘s weekly charts reflect the previous week.

NOTE 2: Because not many K-pop songs make it onto the digital charts, I’ll only list the Top 5 for album sales and the social chart. Then I’ll make notes of any K-pop songs that placed high on the digital charts. (For this week and month, I’ve included digital downloads in the table because most of them are K-pop songs.) To see a full breakdown of the chart, you can go here.

The International Side of K-pop

  • aespa is the first K-pop group to become a brand ambassador for French luxury brand Givenchy. (It’s not uncommon for K-pop idols to be global ambassadors for fashion houses, but it’s rare for a full group to do it.) You can see their first photos with Givenchy here.
  • BTS’s “Dynamite” remains at #46 on Billboard‘s “Hot 100” in its 24th week on the chart.
  • Several K-pop music videos have reached new viewer milestones on YouTube:
    • MAMAMOO’s “Egotistic” is their second music video to reach 100 million views. (The first one was “HIP.”)
    • TWICE’s “Likey” is their second music video to hit 500 million views. (The first one was “TT.”)
    • BLACKPINK’s “Kill This Love” is their second music video to reach 1.2 billion views, meaning that BLACKPINK is currently the only K-pop group to have two music videos over 1.2 billion views. It is also now the fastest K-pop music video to reach that number of views. (The previous record setter was also BLACKPINK with “DDU-DU DDU-DU.”
    • BTS’s “DNA” also hit 1.2 billion views shortly after, making it the first boy group music video to reach that amount of views. It also still remains the most watched K-pop boy group music video on YouTube.
    • BLACKPINK’s “Lovesick Girls” reached 350 million views.
    • BTS’s “Dynamite” is now the fastest K-pop group music video to reach 850 million views.

So rather than linking the exact article for each and every news item (unless the article provides a lot more detail), I will cite my general news sources below.
