Katherine’s K-pop Recap: December 6-12, 2021

A summary of the news, current and upcoming comebacks, charts and music show wins, and more!

NOTE: Except in special cases, the news recapped in these posts will refer to K-pop only. K-dramas, variety shows, and other forms of entertainment will only be mentioned if there is an idol or idol group involved.

News to Note

  • Big Bang member Taeyang has officially become a father, as YG Entertainment confirmed that his wife actress Min Hyorin recently gave birth to their son.
  • Former IZ*ONE member Choi Yena released a personal statement denying that she was the unnamed woman linked to a chaebol in recent news. (Not all the news articles I read explicitly state this, but the rumors are/were about the man sponsoring a female celebrity who got her start as an idol.) You can read a translation of her statement here.
  • The people who accused EVERGLOW’s Aisha of school bullying early this year have admitted they made up the rumors and apologized to her for it. You can read a translation of Yuehua Entertainment’s statement about it here.
  • VOISPER will be disbanding after the release of their final album, which came out on December 8th. You can read a translation of EVERMORE Entertainment’s statement about it here.
  • Super Junior’s Siwon tested positive for COVID-19 and had to drop out of presenting at the MNET Asian Music Awards. The other members all tested negative. You can read translations of SM Entertainment’s statements about it here.
  • About end of year performances and awards ceremonies:
    • HYBE will be holding an online concert on New Year’s Eve, like they did last year. The groups performing are SEVENTEEN (minus Jun and THE8), fromis_9, TXT, and ENHYPEN. BTS will not perform because they’re on an extended break after completing their concert series.
    • SM Entertainment will be holding a free online concert on New Year’s Day, like they did last year. As of now, all of their groups are slated to perform. They also teased a winter album that will feature new songs by SM groups and collaborations between agency artists, and a special art installation at the new company headquarters in Seoul. You can learn more about everything here.
    • The Golden Disc Awards will take place on January 8th. Unlike previous years where there were separate days for physical album awards and digital music awards, everything will be done on the same day. You can see the list of nominees here.
