Group Profile: (G)I-DLE ((여자)아이들)

“I! 안녕하세요, (G)I-DLE 입니다!”

(G)I-DLE became popular almost immediately upon debut back in 2018, and they’ve been rising stars ever since. They’re probably one of the most recognized and successful girl groups of the current generation, thanks to a trendy discography with a variety of different musical styles plus their attention grabbing performances on the show Queendom. They’re also one of the few self-producing girl groups, with leader Soyeon (of Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapstar fame) having a major hand in writing and composing their music. As they near the end of their rookie stage, (G)I-DLE has proved that they have tons of talent, a lot of potential, and a very bright future.

Basic Information

  • Members: Soyeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin (on hiatus), Yuqi, Shuhua
  • Member Age Range: Members born from 1997 (Miyeon) to 2000 (Shuhua)
  • Agency: Cube Entertainment
  • Debut Date: May 2, 2018
  • Name Meaning: (G)I-DLE has several meanings. The “I” stands for “individuality.” 들 (pronounced “deul”) is a word that you use to make the plural form in Korean. So, it means that six different girls with six different images and personalities are represented in one group. It also has references to the words “girl” and “children” when pronounced in Korean.
    • When they are speaking in Korean, they call themselves 아이들 (pronounced kind of like “idol”). When they are speaking in English, they say the G.
    • I’m not sure if the members actually have official designated “images” to project in their music/performances (or if it’s just something they say sometimes), but according to an episode of Idol Room they are: charismatic (Soyeon), mature (Miyeon), dreamy (Minnie), sexy (Soojin), cute (Yuqi), and chic (Shuhua).

  • Fandom Name: Neverland, because (G)I-DLE wants to stay together with their fans forever. It’s also a reference to how (G)I-DLE can be pronounced like “girl” or “children” in Korean.
  • Fandom Colors: Neon Red and Chic Violet (see below)
