Knee Jerk Reaction: “Black Mirror” by ONEUS

I have to say, I’m consistently really impressed by ONEUS. This up and coming boy group has been working so hard at building both their discography and their brand as musicians and artists, and it shows. They’re already on their second comeback this year, and we’re not even halfway through! While I don’t regularly follow ONEUS and just check in on them every comeback, I’ve definitely taken notice of their creativity – and I was curious about how that would manifest itself this time around.

Knee Jerk Reaction: “Hot Sauce” by NCT Dream

Before I talk about NCT Dream, I just want to say how excited I am that NCT has become so popular in Korea recently. I remember when I first came here in 2019, and I told my students NCT was one of my favorite K-pop groups. I figured it was possible they would have heard of them… but nope. They were all like, “Teacher, who’s that?” and I was lowkey devastated. Thankfully, things have definitely changed after NCT 2020. I go to a K-pop album store about once a month, and the last three times I’ve visited I’ve seen a bunch of girls buying tons of NCT albums and collecting photocards. I almost never see fans mass-buying albums for ANY group, so I find this FASCINATING. And now NCT Dream has dropped “Hot Sauce,” and it’s gotten over 70 million views in less than a week – plus it’s #3 Trending in Music on YouTube Korea as I write this. I couldn’t be more thrilled or proud.

Knee Jerk Reaction: “Dun Dun Dance” by Oh My Girl

As a fan of Oh My Girl who’s been around since almost the beginning, I’m so proud of all the success they’re enjoying now. Their path to the top was pretty slow and steady, and seeing their popularity soar in the time that I’ve lived in Korea has been immensely satisfying. That being said… I’m definitely ready for some new music of theirs. If you’re a regular reader of mine, you’ll know that I go all-in on comebacks that I like for however long a group is promoting and then take a break to balance things out. Unfortunately, this has not happened with Oh My Girl because I have literally heard “Nonstop” and “Dolphin” for an entire year. Seriously, I can’t go anywhere without hearing one or the other – and I’ve definitely had my fill of both by now. So as you might imagine, Oh My Girl’s comeback and the promise of a new fun single were very eagerly anticipated in this household.

Knee Jerk Reaction: “Not the End” by Highlight

Sorry for the delay on this post! Normally I try to do reactions within a week of a song’s release, but I’m super behind because I’ve been writing material for the K-pop Starter Kit. I debated just moving on to this week’s music, but I didn’t want to skip over Highlight because I’m quite fond of them. I became a K-pop fan when they were entering the veteran years of their career, like right before they left Cube Entertainment and changed their name. So I wasn’t there for a lot of the high points of their career, but I still felt it was really easy to get invested in them. Their excellent music was part of it, but I also just found them really relatable because we’re around the same age. A lot of things have happened since their last release – both in K-pop and in the members’ own lives – so I was curious about what their comeback would be like.

K-Pop Starter Kit: A Beginner’s Guide (Part One)

There have been dedicated K-pop fans all over the world for years, but it’s amazing just how much that number has increased recently. Though there’s a lot of focus on certain groups breaking into the American music industry, K-pop’s rising popularity isn’t just limited to the United States – it’s truly going global, and it’s awesome to see so many people joining the fun! When I first got into K-pop, it was totally new and unfamiliar territory. And while that was definitely exciting and fascinating, I remember it was also a little overwhelming. None of my friends liked it or even really knew of it, so I didn’t have anyone to talk about it with; I had to learn about cultural norms and industry practices on my own. So for my first official K-Pop Starter Kit post, I’m going to be the guide I wish I had five years ago! And I’ll introduce characteristics of K-pop that could be surprising yet interesting to newcomers.

A New Look For the Blog

I can’t believe it’s been about a year since I came back from hiatus and basically started rebuilding this blog from scratch. Nothing really happened in my personal life over the past year, but this website has changed so much in that span of time. I reformatted everything, I got most of my group profiles up to date, and I was able to start posting a bunch of original content as well! So since the blog has entered a new era, I thought it deserved to have an updated look to match.

NEW COLUMN ANNOUNCEMENT: K-Pop Starter Kit

Hi all! I’m really excited to introduce this column to you, because it’s something I’ve been planning for a very long time. I originally had this idea a while ago, but I kept putting it off because I was reformatting the blog and I didn’t have enough time to make all of the posts involved. Actually, it’s kind of debatable if I have the time now… since I’m busier than ever… but whatever! I’ve delayed this long enough! So without further ado, I’d like to present my latest series: the K-pop Starter Kit!

Favorites of 2021: April

(This was supposed to come out this past weekend, but… I made six consecutive posts on Sunday and was totally drained ^^”’) I honestly can’t believe that we’re done with April and already several days into May. This year is moving by so fast, and I can’t deal. While there was an abundance of new music in April, I haven’t had a ton of time to consume a lot of K-pop lately – sadly, teaching at two schools has significantly changed my lifestyle. So although I checked out almost everything, most of the little free time I had for K-pop was divided between several releases.
