My Favorite 30 K-Pop Songs From the First Half of 2020

Hello all! I’m taking a break from profile updating to try out out something new. Back when I was more active on this blog, I used to do a Top 50 list of my favorite K-pop songs at the end of each year. (NOTE: Even though I say “songs,” I actually mean “comebacks” or “debuts” because I like to look at everything as a whole package: song, choreography, music video, styling, concept, etc.) While I still plan on continuing that tradition, I thought it would be fun to make a kind of “halfway point” list because 2020 has had a lot of great music that I want to talk about. So, here’s a little bit about everything I enjoyed between January and June!

UPDATED Monsta X Profile!

Hi, all! The last time I posted an update, things were just starting to pick up at work and the students were slowly but surely returning to school. Now as we approach the end of June, my schedule has more or less returned to normal. I’m grateful that my work day no longer consists of me sitting at my desk and trying to find things to fill up eight hours worth of time… but the downside for the blog is that my productivity has once again been forcibly slowed down. I’m still making minor updates and edits most nights after work and on the weekends, but I sadly won’t be able to completely reformat a profile within a week anymore T_T

That being said – after almost a month of work, the Monsta X profile has finally been fully updated and brought into 2020! It was a long time coming, because apparently I didn’t even update it when I changed my group profile format back in 2018 (yikes). There were a lot of things I changed and added besides the new format, so I thought I’d make a list:

  • Made individual profiles for each member: It’s been five years since Monsta X debuted, and each member has done a significant amount of individual activities. So, I decided it would be better to give each member his own page.
  • Added discography pages: Because Monsta X released a fair amount of music in English over the past year or so, I made separate pages for their Korean music and their English music.
  • Updated “Music Show Wins, Awards, and Achievements” because Monsta X has accomplished a LOT since I first made the profile.
  • Updated “Special Stages”: Monsta X tends to do a lot of special performances, so I added a bunch of them and then put in some page breaks to make things easier to navigate.
  • MAJORLY updated “Variety Show Appearances”: I first made the profile back during their “Dramarama” era, so a LOT of things needed to be added. Now there are separate pages for all their eras up through “Follow.” (“Fantasia” is listed on the main “Variety Show Appearances” page.)
    • I also did a major reformat for their “Reality Shows” page, since they have so many.
    • I made separate pages for online segments they did in the U.S. over the past couple of years, since they’ve been building a presence over there.

As promised, up next is TWICE! I guess now that my time to work on this blog has been limited, my updating M.O. has changed from “groups that are having a comeback” to “groups that just had a comeback.” ^^”” As of now, I haven’t decided if I’m going to do anything with the BLACKPINK profile. It seems like they’re treating their pre-release single as a comeback, but I don’t know if I should go ahead with the reformat or wait until they put out the full album. I’m inclined towards the latter because TWICE just had a comeback and GFriend is having a comeback… and I know both need probably the same amount of work that Monsta X did. (Being a multifan is really hard sometimes.) But I also know from looking at my stats that a lot of BLACKPINK fans tend to check out this site, so I’ll try and think of something!

And for those of you who might be waiting for the WayV profile, I promise I haven’t forgotten! I’m still a little maxed out on boy group content for the time being, since I watched SO many NCT and Monsta X videos over the past couple months. I just need a little time to focus on the girl groups, and then I’ll come back and add it!

Love,
Katherine

UPDATED NCT PROFILE!

Hey all, here’s another weekly update about how the eternal reformatting is going. I know I said Monsta X was up next, but it turns out I was wrong. I didn’t realize the rest of the NCT pages needed so much work, but I spent the past few days on it and now everything should have the most recent information.

UPDATED NCT 127 PROFILE!

Hey, everyone! As promised, I’ve updated the NCT 127 profile in light of their two recent comebacks with “Kick It” and “Punch.” Since they’re an extremely content-heavy group, I’ve added a whole bunch of pages for their variety show stuff. There are new pages for “Regular” and “Superhuman” eras, as well more detailed pages of videos they did while they were in the United States. I’ll continue updating any videos for “Punch” as they come out.

UPDATED NCT Dream Profile!

Hi all! As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been working on updating NCT’s overall profile. Since I was waiting for NCT 127 to finish releasing teaser images for their repackage (plus their album and MV), I figured I’d start with NCT Dream. Turns out there was a LOT to add since I initially made the profile. The main change is that I added a BUNCH of variety show videos to the page. So now the main page has videos for their latest comeback promotions (“Ridin”), and I made separate new pages for “We Go Up” and “BOOM.”

UPDATED NU’EST Profile + Announcement About Group Profiles

Since I haven’t been active on this blog for a while, I decided to start by reformatting what was already here. The Group Profiles I make are pretty much the most visited pages, so I want to spend some time bringing everything up to date. NU’EST was having a comeback around when I began, so they are the first of my profiles to get the new look! If you want to know more about NU’EST or just see what the rest of the group profiles will eventually look like, click here!

Katherine Does K-Pop: Version 2.0

Hello, all! It’s been a long time since I’ve been actively posting on here, right? I was just thinking about how I started this blog back all the way in 2017. (Not actually that long ago, but it sure feels like it.) I was living in Europe but was kind of stuck due to visa problems, so I pretty much remember that year as one long stretch of boredom, inactivity, and having to find ways to entertain myself in my apartment. It was pretty taxing on my mental health, and I definitely relied on this blog for a sense of routine and consistency. Given my new normal during the current global situation, I can’t help but draw parallels to those early days. Focusing on my blog really helped me through a hard time, so I’ve resolved to once again devote my surplus of free time and energy towards “Katherine Does K-pop” – Version 2.0!

Site Under Construction!

Hi all! Long time no see! Hope everyone is safe and healthy during this global pandemic. I have a LOT of updates to give, so I thought I’d start up the blog again now that I have some more free time… but I just discovered that my previous theme is outdated (oops). So I changed it to a more current theme – and even though it looks almost exactly like my old theme, the formatting in fact is very different.

I just wanted to give you all a heads up that things might look a little messy for a while, especially since I have to update a lot of images and information and put everything in the new format. But I’m going to work as quickly as I can! Thank you always for having an interest in my blog; I’ll be back soon with a major updates post 🙂
